The water towers, or well houses, of the 1800s or early 1900s are fast becoming extinct. Once, powered by windmills or crude gas engines, they were used to store water for irrigation and house needs. Many had a stove to heat the house water. Now that the towers are useless for this purpose, most are just storage places. Each year more are torn down for progress, and thus these charming little towers are gradually disappearing from the North Fork scene. (less)
